Helping authors with technology

I help indie authors on a tight budget love their websites, and I help them set up all the different services they need to reach readers, no matter what platforms they’re on, what service providers they use, or how “untechnical” they are. I also help them to publish quality e-books they can be proud of, all without breaking the bank.

Since you're a designer, will you design my book cover/do my branding?

The short answer is no.

The Long Answer is, maybe, under the right circumstances.

I am a trained graphic designer and have experience in both branding and cover design, but here’s the deal: there’s a reason why professional book covers start at $1,500, or proper branding takes months and thousands of dollars: it matters. Things that matter take a lot of time and special attention and skill, which in turn costs a lot—a LOT—of money. I have the skill, but I don’t have the time, and since I’m helping indie authors on a budget, they probably don’t have the money.

Here’s the deal, though: I have the skill, and (I’m assuming) you don’t have the money, so “the right circumstances” will be if you need a cover for e.g. a free download, or you want to have your name at the top of your site looking all pretty and “logo-ish” but that’s all, then I can do that. The caveat is that I will not spend a lot of time on it, do market research, worry about the emotional impact of the colours I use, or any other time-consuming exercise.

Bottom line: if you’ve got the money, it’s worth doing these things properly. But if you don’t, I’m a really, really good stand-in until you do.

What payment methods do you accept?

Currently I only accept Paypal from international customers, or a direct bank transfer (EFT) from South African banks.

What content do I need for my new website/blog?

Think of the pages on your site, and what you want to say on them. Look at other author sites for ideas. But don’t worry too much, I’ll be guiding you through the process of creating what you’ll need.

Will you provide content for my new website/blog?

Unfortunately, no. If you don’t have content ready when I design your website for you, I’ll use dummy content in the place of text and images, which you will have to replace yourself later on—unless you hire me again to do it for you :).

I've seen this gimmick/bells and whistles on some website. Can you do it on mine?

First of all, it depends on where and how your site is hosted. If it’s on a free platform, like Blogger or, then probably not.

With self-hosted WordPress sites, the possibilities are nearly endless, so odds are it is possible.

When it comes to good design, though, less is always more, and on the internet where attention spans are as short as a goldfish’s, distractions should be avoided. So I always recommend to steer clear of bells and whistles or gimmicks, in favour of functional, clean design.

If you still feel you absolutely need that shiny object, contact me and ask. If it can be done, and you accept my quote, then I will do it with pleasure.
